Ventas notches major growth in Q1
Louisville, KY-based Ventas Inc. is off to a banner year start in 2007, reporting a net income in the first quarter up 55% ($45 million) from the same period last year ($29 million), according to a company press release. Ventas' total revenues also increased by 25%, to the tune of $122 million, up from $98 million last year. Ventas spokespeople attributed the bump in profits to a rent reset on the 255 facilities it leases to Kindred Healthcare, Inc., and also strong internal growth. Ventas also purchased Sunrise Senior Living Real Estate Investment Trust for $1.96 billion.

Elderly still falling after preventative coaching
A recent study by the University of Wisconsin suggested fall prevention coaching for seniors did not decrease the number of falls that occurred, according to the Journal of the American Geriatrics Society.
The 349 subjects were 65 or older, with a history of either two falls within the past year or one fall that left them with an injury or balance problem in the past two years. Trained nurses performed a series of intervention techniques, starting with an initial fall risk assessment using an algorithm. Recommendations were made on a case-by-case basis to the subjects and their physicians, including referrals to physical therapists, regularly scheduled phone calls made 11 times per month, and designated exercise and balance plans. The study did not show substantial differences in the results between the control group and the intervention group.

Workers’ compensation claims tend to proceed to litigation when employees feel they are not getting paid what they should, or when the insurance company doesn’t think an employee is disabled to the extent claimed, according to Martin Schneider of Schneider and Ricci, a Salem, MA-based firm specializing in workers’ compensation.
