HHS provides Web site on HIPAA privacy rule

The Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) released information on their latest Web site that will provide information on enforcement of the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) privacy rule on April 20, according to the HSS Web site.

To coincide with the HIPAA privacy rule's fourth anniversary, the new Web site gives consumers and healthcare providers information on HHS activities, results, and guidelines for enforcing the rule.

Additionally, the site provides information on consumers' rights to access their health information and consumers' control of how their personal information is used or disclosed.

The site offers consumers access to case studies by issue, such as lack of safeguards, and by covered entity, which readers may find helpful as well.

Coding tip: Let technique drive colonoscopy code selection

Coding colonoscopies may be difficult due to variable physician documentation.

For example, when referring to a polyp, a physician may document that he or she "removed in its entirety" or removed it "piece-meal."

Fortunately, these terms are not relevant to selecting the correct CPT code. Instead, coders should base code selection on the technique used to resect the tissue.

However, when a physician uses multiple techniques, only report one CPT code, regardless of whether the physician used the technique to resect single or multiple polyps, or whether he or she used the technique multiple times on a single polyp.

Whether the verbiage in the operative report simply states that the physician removed the polyp by snare polypectomy or that he or she removed it "piece-meal" with a snare, report both procedures using CPT code 45385.

This tip is brought to you by Ellis Medical Consulting, Inc.

MASCA members receive NPI information

The Missouri Ambulatory Surgery Center Association (MASCA) held an educational presentation on the national provider identifier (NPI) lead by Barbara Gerke of Ascension Health April 12, according to the MASCA Web site.

The presentation, titled "NPI: Business Impact and Medical Office Considerations," addressed ongoing confusion about the NPI contingency plan.

Gerke provides answers to such topics as where to fill out the NPI number on your new 1500-HICF form, how to implement the NPI, how to train staff on use of the NPI, and whether or not your billing software can handle an NPI.

Cardiologists, orthopedic surgeons generate an average of more than $2.3 million each year

A new survey reveals that cardiologists and orthopedic surgeons generate the most in net revenue per year, among seven specialties surveyed.

The survey, conducted by Merritt, Hawkins and Associates, a physician search firm, polled 119 hospital CFOs on their physicians, cardiologists, and neurologists and the amount of net revenue they brought in from various affiliated facilities in one year.

Results include both inpatient and outpatient net revenues from such things as patient referrals, procedures, and tests performed in hospitals.

Revenues generated by one full-time physician included some of the following:

  • Invasive cardiologist-$2.66 million
  • Orthopedic surgeon-$2,31 million
  • Neurosurgeon-$2.1 million
  • Pediatrician-$698,000
  • Ophthalmologist-$584,000

Avoid automatic conditional accreditation during survey

Accreditation professionals—beware! Did you know that failure to assess and implement Interim Life Safety Measures (ILSMs) as appropriate will lead to automatic conditional accreditation as early as day ONE of your Joint Commission survey? If you're an accreditation professional or a Joint Commission coordinator, you need to make sure you're prepared to face a life safety specialist during survey. Join HCPro on May 30 for the live audioconference, Interim Life Safety Measures: Why You are at risk for Automatic Conditional Accreditation, and let expert healthcare consultants help you assess your risk and ensure your ILSM program is bulletproof.
